Private water taxi in Venice

Good afternoon,

My family & I (husband, 6 yr old) will be ending our week vacation in Venice. Our plan is to return our rental car at Marco Polo airport & take a private water taxi to our hotel. When I start to book a reservation (Motoscafivenezia), I need to specify a time. I can only estimate an arrival time based on the current “time to destination” when I plug our route in to google maps. For reference, this will be mid October & we will be driving from Pienza… i know it’s a long drive but my husband prefers the control aspect of driving vs a train.

I understand I’ll be given a voucher once I book the water taxi, but it doesn’t say if the reservation is good for x amount of hours past the specified time.

Would we be better off just walking up & getting a private water taxi? The planner in me would prefer something already booked, but i know that isn’t always going to work accordingly.

Thank you for any help offered,
Amanda

I would just put expected time of arrival and note that it is an estimate
There are many water taxis all lined up-any will take your voucher
They are used to picking up customers after flights which are always iffy on arrival time so your situation is not any different

Book in advance if you must but just booking when you arrive works as well

Google maps is not an accurate gauge to go by and it can easily take an hour or longer than the time estimated. Because of the possibility of your car trip from Tuscany to Venice taking longer than projected, it will be better to simply get a water taxi after you arrive. You never know how much you will be delayed due to traffic or for other reasons, so it’s best to simply wait until you arrive to get a water taxi. They will be there when you need them and there’s no need to pre-book them. It actually is to their advantage that you pre-book them—- not to your advantage.

another advantage of getting one from the many waiting for fares is if you change your mind because the drive didn't go well and you're too tired to enjoy the views from the boat or the weather is bad and it wouldn't be worth it or you decide after all that the train makes more sense - you see what I mean - it gives you the chance to pivot with no penalty.

There is a fast and cheap land bus that goes to Piazzale Roma just across the Grand Canal from the train station where you can get a vaporetto (think water bus with incredible views and lots of open space) down the Grand Canal to your hotel, wherever that is.

If any of this is worth knowing and keeping in your back pocket if you let us know your hotel we may have help in getting to the door.

Hi Nigel,
Thank you for the perspective of a long day. We are staying at hotel Ai Reali.

Im prepared for a long day of driving, which makes the private taxi appealing. I don’t have to navigate a 6 year old, luggage and a possibly busy vaporetto. We are arriving on a Friday, which adds to the day needing to be as smooth as possible. Plus I have already booked our tickets for St. Mark’s Basilica for the last entry on Friday. Was that a smart idea, probably not. I’m just trying to make this as easy as possible :)

I routinely add one hour to Google driving times in the same distance range. Twenty extra minutes will be likely spent in queue for building works that will last a few years, just north of Florence.

I am wondering if you considered dropping car at Piazzale Roma? You can get a water taxi there. Your hotel has its own water dock. I would have the hotel book the water taxi for you- it bills itself as a luxury hotel so that is a service they should offer.

If you drop at airport you should figure on maybe 75-90 min til you are at your hotel (drop off time/wait for water taxi, 45+ min ride). It would be much quicker from P Roma and you are not going out of the way to VCE. Also has the lovely benefit of riding down the Grand Canal.

Thank you, Christine for the recommendation to drop our car off at Piazzale Roma. I will definitely look into that option, especially given the extra time I didn't expect it would take from drop off to arrival.
