I'm looking for any advice on the advantages or not for prepaying for a private water taxi or my chances of getting one after arrival without a reservation. I'm arriving at Venice airport at 10pm and the one water taxi service recommended to me by the hotel is Consorzio Venezia Water Taxi. Consorzio related their airport desk is closed after 10pm and I would need to prepay and then call their office after I landed to have the water taxi sent to airport. This seems like a lot of trouble and too may variables, like paying and not getting picked up or waiting a long time after a long trip. Is it possible to walk to the dock and get a private taxi after 10pm without a reservation? I don't care if the taxi is semi-private and at that hour I don't mind spending $100+euros just to get to the hotel and crash.
Which exact hotel are you staying in?
You can also take a regular taxi for much less to Piazzale Roma? Then from there you can take a vaporetto, or water taxi, or walk if it's not too far. There is no guarantee your hotel may be accessible by water taxis. Some are not on canals so the water taxis might leave you just as far as a vaporetto.
Thank you very much for responding. I'm staying at Antiche Figure and it's on the Canal and accessible by water. I didn't want to make any transfers that time of night since it might be about at after 11pm so. Just looking for the most direct with the least hassle.
You realize that the walk from Piazzale Roma to the Antiche Figure (located directly across the Grand Canal from Santa Lucia station) is actually less than the walk from the airport door to the water taxi dock. OK, there are 2 smallish bridges with steps on the way. And the No 5 bus from the airport door to Piazzale Roma runs until 40 past midnight and cost 8 EUR.
Thank you for the help, it's much appreciated. I don't mind walking any distance during the day when I land in an unfamiliar city. I don't want to navigate alone at 11pm and after 9 hour flight, 5 hour layover, and a 2 hour flight. I can get very lost quickly and I'm trying just to get the hotel without getting lost at 11pm, hence why I am looking a direct route with the least chance to get lost. I was curious if the water taxis are around at the airport without reservation or are they gone if they don't a pre-paid customers?
I'd go ahead and prebook it and eliminate the variables. Is this the outfit you were referring to? They are pretty reputable. https://www.motoscafivenezia.it/eng/?gclid=CN2eo83MvtICFQIcaQod7JcNVw
Take a regular taxi. They will drop you off at Piazzale Roma. It's 1000ft from there to your hotel, maybe 5 min walk if you walk slowly.
I don't care if it's past midnight. You have nothing to worry about. Even in the middle of the night there will be more people walking around there (more than half of them American) than you will ever see in your town during any given day.
I just looked at where your hotel is located and agree with Roberto 100%: it's SO close to Piazzale Roma that bus or taxi to there and then just the short walk would be the way to go. It's such a straightforward route that you don't have to worry about getting lost, even at night: all you have to do is follow alongside the canal.
It's absolutely your budget but I can't see spending that kind of money to get to an accommodation so well positioned for access on foot?
I just checked a map: your hotel is even a closer walk than mine from Piazzale Roma, and I'm planning on taking the bus to Piazzale Roma and walking!
When my husband and I arrive at the Venice airport in April, we're going to buy a ticket for the ATVO airport bus and catch a ride to Piazzale Roma and then walk. We're staying at Palazzo Odoni.
Looking at the ATVO schedule, it still runs after 10pm, so instead of a taxi, you could also ride the bus to Piazzale Roma. It runs every 20 minutes and goes straight to Piazzale Roma.

I also agree with others that navigating Venice at night should be of minimal concern. The walk from Piazzale Roma to your hotel is via a sidewalk along the water, not anything like skinny back alleys.
I love how everyone decides your sense of what is safe is wrong...mostly men or those who will be with men I might add. I'm just hoping to bolster your resolve that it is OK to feel as you do. If more would confirm that water taxis will be there...just like regular taxis at other airports at that hour, then I wouldn't prebook. I often don't have a working phone when I arrive so prebooking with the need for a call would be a hassle. (Hold harmless: I apologize if I sound ornery, I haven't had my morning coffee yet.)
So would someone actually answer Imsmalls' question without a lecture:
Is it possible to walk to the dock and get a private taxi after 10pm
without a reservation?

A question like this is hard to answer without having been in this exact circumstance. I doubt if anyone on this forum has ever arrived at Venice that late needing a water taxi, and if they did, they probably prebooked.
I'll add to all the mansplaining by pointing out that you can "walk" the route from Piazzale Roma to Antiche Figure using google street view before you actually arrive.
I second Sam about the Google street view! I've looked at routes for walking to hotels, to St. Mark's Square, to the colosseum, etc., during my trip planning for my Italy vacation. I find it extremely helpful. I even do that when I know I'll be visiting an unknown place in the U.S.
I mentioned earlier that walking around in Venice at night should be of minimal concern, and I'm a 31-year-old female. I would still make the same comment if I was planning to visit Venice alone. :-)
We were in a similar situation last fall, knowing that our flight would land later than 11pm after flying from the US via London. We ended up reserving a water taxi with Treviso Car Service, which gets very good reviews. Service was excellent and very professional, just expensive. 150€, 35 minutes door to door

We did not have to prepay; and they assured me they would monitor the arrival time of our flight.
If you are familiar with and comfortable in Venice, I'd certainly choose the cheaper option that Roberto suggests-taxi to Piazzale Roma for 60€ then vaporetto to your hotel.
Also, email your hotel and ask for their advice! They can be very helpful in providing the best directions and options for you..... I am also arriving at night, later this month, and my hotel really put my mind at ease....because I know we are going to be zombies when we arrive! Good luck! Karen
I recommend getting advice from your hotel; after you, they have the biggest stake in your happy arrival.
Good advice: talk to your hotel.
No one said you were "wrong" to feel as you do, and no one meant to "lecture" but rather reassure you that there was another option to consider which wouldn't be difficult, expensive or unsafe. No one here would want to put you in that position! I'll just say that I am 62, 5' 2", on the small side, and have zero sense of direction but would feel OK walking to the hotel from the bus stop alone at night after a long flight.
Whatever works for YOU is the right answer! :O)
