Would anyone recommend taking a private tour (small group) of the Vatican Museum? If so, would you recommend a particular tour company?
I used Through Eternity, very good tour.
We've booked Through Eternity, as well. I sent out several queries and their answers satisfied me most. We have two children, and they assured me they "speak to" all ages and account for the diversity among groups.
The official vatican tours are excellent and affordable: http://biglietteriamusei.vatican.va/musei/tickets/do
You cannot expect much privacy. The crowds are generally large. Even if you are in a small group of 2 you will be rubbing elbows with the masses. On the official tour, you are given headsets so you can easily hear the tour guide without needing to crowd around the guide or even in the general din of all the tourists.
Hello, having just visited the Vatican last October, I have to advise you to reserve a general admission ticket with an audio guide on the Vatican website and NOT do a guided tour. You will be amazed on how crowded the museum is and I felt like while our guide from the Vatican was very nice and informative, she kind of rushed us through and we didn't get to linger or go into all the rooms we would have liked to. I have a feeling it was because of how crowded the museums were. My boyfriend and I are not people who liked to be rushed. We took an audio guide of the Residenzplatz in Salzburg (a similarish type of religious palace/museum) and feel much better about our experience there.
