My husband and I will be traveling to Italy for 3 weeks in April and May. We would like to prearrange transportation to pick us up at the airport in Rome and take us to our hotel. Also, to use for our return to the airport. Any suggestions would be greatly appreciated.
What airport, FCO o CIA? There are cabs waiting outside both and a fixed fare to central Rome.
We've used Rome Cabs (a private car service despite the name) a number of times from the airport to the ciy and from the city back to the airport. Just google them for information. We simply send an email detailing our needs and we get a reply within 24 hours. A private car service will cost a little more than a regular taxi, but after a long flight, it's worth it to be met inside the terminal and wisked to the hotel. Some say have your hotel make the arrangements, but we prefer to not do that. One might get a car service, a free lance "taxi", or a relative of the desk clerk. On time we wound up being driven by the brother-in-law of a hotel staff member. Nothing bad happened, but there were four of us and only one in-law.
Is there a reason why you don't want to use a taxi? We used taxis several times in Rome and they were just fine.
Just read what Rick and others have to say about which taxis to use.
Always use Rome cabs - they are always waiting for you in the arrivals hall., I think they were much the same cost as the official taxi is. Have used Welcome pickups in other destinations and been pleased with them.
We will be flying in to FCO. We just thought a private service would be more convenient for us after flying all day and overnight. Thanks for the recommendations.
You can also make an airport taxi reservation through Booking.com. Choice of type of cab, it will also give you the price for any available bus service, 24 hour cancellation.
Rome taxis are great. It is a fixed rate from airport to you hotel in the center of Rome. The most convenient way is clear immigrations, grab you luggage and head to the taxi line. You don't have to worry about being early or late. The price is fixed. Hand a notecard to the driver with your hotels name and address and you are off.
We always just take a taxi, right out front
50 euros fixed rate, NO TIP
Your hotel can call a taxi for your return
Same fixed rate
Except for those times when friends picked me up, I’ve always used a regular taxi at the taxi stand in front of the terminals. It’s 10€ cheaper than a private limo service (€50 flat taxi rate vs €60+) and they work exactly the same. The only difference is the color of the car: white with taxi logos vs (generally) blue or black. In both cases cars tend to be fairly new as cars must meet the latest Euro Emission standards (Euro 5 or higher) to be licensed to operate in the historical center.
Your hotel can arrange this if you ask them, it might end up being their brother but whatever.
Another vote for Rome Cabs.
Just curious, is it ever faster to take a taxi from the airport to Rome Termini, vs the train (Leonardo express is ~32 minutes, leaving every 15 minutes I think)?
