Private transfer from rome FCO to Siena

Hi. I am grateful for this service! My husband and I are celebrating our 50th wedding anniversary by spending a week in Siena with our daughter and two grandsons --all great people that we love to travel with, by the way!

Can you recommend a completely reliable company to meet us at the airport in morning and drive us to our hotel in Siena. I know this will be considerably more expensive than train/bus but we want the most helpful, least traumatic experience possible. Do you know approximate cost? We don't need a full fledged tour after flying all night but it would be great to have a friendly, knowledgeable driver who could comment on points of interest and even arrange for a nice lunch!

We will be in Siena during the Pallio, don't have tickets but would like to participate as much as possible in events before the race? Any suggestions about this?

We may have to choose between a day in Florence and a wine tour/farm tour. Our grandsons are 13 and 15 so it is a tough choice for us. Any thoughts on this?

Any suggestions would be greatly appreciated. It is the trip of a lifetime for us!

Thank you!

Question: Are ALL of you flying into Rome on the same flight, or are you meeting the rest of them there?

I'm assuming you are both 70+ years old if you've been married 50 years, and CONGRATULATIONS! I've just celebrated my 35th! Personally, after having done ATL/Rome and JFK/Rome a number of times, if it were me, I'd spend at least a night in Rome, preferably several before embarking to Siena as it's a good several hours away, no matter how you go! AND Rome is AWESOME!
And Jetlag is AWFUL even if you've flown business class.

Here's my BEST advice: Go to Roninrome.com. He is an American who lived in Rome for years and built the best website for any city anywhere in the world. He now owns a travel agency in Atlanta and he will get you the best service available. I have absolutely no financial connection with this company, but I do know he can get it done. I've used his website every year for every trip to Rome, and I've been there about ten times. He's saved me money, time and mistakes! Mistakes being the most important!

Another very reliable company is Context Rome. I've used them for tours, not airport transfers, but I found them to be really good with great local support. I suggest checking their website, since I know they will do transfers.

Thank you so much for these great replies. We will be heading straight to Siena but will have a few days in Rome on our way back to US. Yes! You guessed it! We are in our 70s and going strong! Thank you for the congratulations. We have earned this good time in Italy!

We will be arriving about an hour before our family arrives from North Carolina. If its not too expensive I think a private transfer will best for us.

Again, thanks to all you have replied. I will follow through with your suggestionds

www.romecabs.com which we've used a couple of times. Completely reliable, English-speaking safe drivers, late model cars (Mercedes, etc.). Commentary is provided along the way. I'm sure a lunch can be arranged. Email them for a quote.

Regarding choosing between a day in Florence and a wine/farm tour: ask the kids' opinion, too, since you want to make everyone happy. For the Accademia and Uffizi museums, you should reserve an entry time in advance, on their web sites. Otherwise, your time in the city will be flexible and the group could even split up.

I don't want to be "Captain Obvious" here, but make SURE you tell the taxi company the number in your party. Taxis are very small, and you will definitely need a full sized van. In your case, I definitely think Private Driver would be best! Have loads of fun, and you certainly have deserved this fantastic trip!

Thank you ALL for wonderful help! Your insight is just what's needed.

One more question on private transfers-- what about tipping? Do you treat the driver to lunch if you make a stop en route?

Thank you!

Doni,
I am going to second the romecabs recommendation. They were great for the trip to FCO from my hotel in Rome and I got their info from Ron in Rome, who can not be beat in terms of great recommendations. I don't know about buying your driver lunch or tipping but I bet others will chime in on that. I can tell you in Ecuador we did both with a driver who took us out for the day but perhaps there are different customs at play in Italy. Either way I'm sure you'll have a great ride.

Tipping isn't part of the Italian culture as it is in America. Leaving a few spare coins for the waiter after good restaurant service is a nice thing to do though. A taxi driver won't be insulted if you don't tip. Private drivers are the same. Nevertheless I've given a small tip to the romecabs drivers as appreciation for excellent service.
