We have been quoted 180 Euros for both ways - any better prices out there for private transfers?
Are you opposed to taking the train? It is very cheap and convenient.
Not opposed but we will be taking the train from Florence so would welcome a nice ride into Sorrento and a private transfer will be a nice treat - if it's at the right price.
You can do it so pay the price. Since you are on the train from Florence just walk downstairs and take the train to Sorrento. It would look about the same from the car or train window. I would use the 180 for driver in Sorrento along the coast. Much prettier.
Yes, 90 euro each way is the prevailing price for a private transfer (limo service) from Naples to Sorrento, which takes about one hour, traffic permitting.
The cheaper alternative is the Circumvesuviana commuter train from the Naples' Garibaldi station (next to the Central station at the lower level).
The Circumvesuviana is not a luxury train and given the amount of graffiti on the outside it can be intimidating like a ride on the NY subway to the Bronx, however it's safe. Just keep an eye for the occasional pickpocket when it's crowded.

I don't recommend the Circumvesuviana during the evening commute when it can be crowded. Late morning it's perfectly fine.
Several advantages to the private transfer, or just a taxi, from Napoli Centrale to Sorrento. You have been quoted a fair, even good, price. You would save the hassle of dealing with your baggage on the Circumvesuviana, which can be considerable if the train is crowded. The driver could take you right to your lodging in Sorrento, rather than leaving you to walk or take a taxi in Sorrento, which is not cheap. Also, you would leave right away on your schedule, not tied to the train schedule. All in all, you would arrive more quickly in your room in Sorrento, and be able to get out to quickly begin enjoying Sorrento! The advantages grow if you have more people in your party, or more than one carry-on bag each, or are arriving at a busy commuter time or evening.
This is not private but http://www.curreriviaggi.it/eng/index.php now does pick up at the
Naples train station. Cost is 10 euro.
