My two sisters and their husbands will join my husband and me in Rome to celebrate my 50th Birthday. We want to make the most of our time in Rome - four days - so we want to use a private tour company. Does anyone have experience/recommendations on a reasonably priced company? My sister read Mr. Steve's Italy/Rome guide and has contacted a company recommended, but the price seemed unreasonable - $700 Euros per couple. Thoughts?

What type of private tour are you looking for? Rome is easy to see on your own and with the assistance of some group tours. If you could provide a better description of what you want, it would be helpful in responding to your question. Also, look at RoninRome.com

What type of "tour companies" are you interested in?
If you're thinking of a walking tour of some of the local sites with a local Guide, you could contact roninrome as a few other people have mentioned.
You could also consider Francesca Caruso (listed in the Guidebook) as she's excellent!
The price of €700 per couple is outrageous! The Guides mentioned above will provide an excellent tour at far less cost.

Something is off. I am guessing they want a private guide plus vehicle for four days. That is $60/day/person which might be reasonable, assuming it includes admission fees, etc., but certainly overkill at the guide level. Need some clarity.

We enjoyed the 3 tours we had with Through Eternity while in Rome. We made our reservations through their web site. Each tour was thoroughly enjoyed and the tour guide made the history come alive. They limit the number in their group which was really nice. We would use them again and highly recommend them.

The way I'm reading this is that you want to hire a private guide for all 4 days. If so, $700 is reasonable. Private guides are much more expensive than guided tour groups. Louann, please clarify what you are looking for.

Thanks to all who provided suggestions. We have contacted Angel Tours and Ron in Rome. We are in the final stages of planning our trip. Thanks to all of you, we are sure to have a wonderful time!
Now, any thoughts on Venice???
