any recommendations on a private or shared driver from the port of Civitavecchia to Rome?
We have used Rome Cabs (a private car service despite the name) a number of times. Granted, it was always in and around Rome, but we were always very happy with the service, price, and etc. They do service the cruise port, but I'm not sure about the price. But all private transportation from the port to Rome will be expensive. Send them an email detailing your needs and you should get a reply within 24 hours. If they can not accommodate you, I think you can safely rely on their suggestions for another service.
Thank you. I will check them out.
Is there a reason you can't use the train? The cruise ships are all serviced by bus to and from the train station and any private car would have to meet you there. It's a very easy train trip to, and from, Rome by train, and faster than a car would be.
KGC, I do not believe your information about the pick up point for private car/drivers is correct. Authorized companies can pick up directly from the pier. Others pick up from outside the cruise terminal not the train station. Plus, a car will take them to their destination, not just the Rome train station.
Thanks, we have thought about the train and may try it but they often have strikes and since we have tickets to the Colosseum we want to make sure we have a ride.
We have been through Civit.... at least seven times and always used the train. It can be a bit of a zoo especially if more than one cruise ship is docked. Second, our experience is that the port bus only take you to the entrance and not the train station. The train station (you can see it) is about a mile or so from the port entrance and we walk. A private driver will be close to 250 euro or a little less. And there will be lots of taxi at the entrance eager to take you to Rome. Ask for a fixed price. Probably about the same. Good luck.

Frank is spot on about it being a zoo -- even if there is only one large cruise ship docking. The train station is, in my opinion, too far to walk if you have more then one roller type bag each. Getting a cab from the port entrance to the station can also be a bit iffy as most are hoping for a fare to Rome. Plus, the train station is small and gets crowded quickly. We've taken the train, but would not try it if we had tickets for a certain time. Just food for thought.

this subject is brought so much here on the forum. so many different ways to decide what's important/convenience/budget.

this website lets you know how many cruise ships in port, capacity of each ship will help you out with decisions. ships can have 3-4,000 people X 4 or 5 ships in port which means 12,000 to 20,000 people wanting the same thing you do, plus disrespect, nasty, grumpy, pushy, sweaty & stinky, obnoxious. been there seen that. many want cheapo to the max yet trip cost a pretty nickel, pay for the convenience. years ago had a student protest all around piazza navona/pantheon area, streets blocked, cops with guns, uzies, tanks, can't get out, walked couple blocks to main street found taxi and begged to take us to port (out of his parameter but cost us 140E and away we went, many missed ship)
what date is cruise arriving to civitavecchia and how many people in your group, what berth, it will be a zoo. worth my sanity and stress to hire a taxi to rome, have hotel address handy. what time is colosseum tour and neat your hotel. just FYI to you, no flaggin taxis down, go to taxi stop. we learned that one fast.
couple things you can do, register for free on cruisecritic.com
find roll call and post if someone on board wants to share taxi and split cost. meet each other on ship to know them, meet outside ship and find driver. schedule about 9:30 or 10:00am to get off ship for pickup to rome hotel
reserve taxi (romecabs.com) ahead of time and just pay cost. or you may find someone on board willing to share, up to you to decide. hope this helps with your decision, enjoy your cruise and have a great time in rome.
