Could you elaborate on what type of "private Italy tours" you're considering and what price range?
You might have a look at the RS Italy tours to begin with. I've taken the RS South Italy tour and it was fantastic!

Thank you for responding.
I have a friend who is going to Italy (very soon - I think 2 weeks), with his wife and their 12 year old daughter. I mentioned to him that he would get more out of his experience if he hire a private tour guide to do excursions and drive them around in Rome and see the "important" sites. I don't think budget is an issue. I don't think they have completely planned out or researched Italy enough to get the full experience.

Billy: You might also check www.private-italy.com. Some friends did a tour with them this year and raved about it. The web site looks good...but not from personal experience.
