Private Guide's Lunch in Rome?

I've searched the archives a dozen different ways and can't find an answer to this question: when you are touring with a private guide in Rome, or a private driver/guide on an excursion out of town, do you buy his/her lunch? And are there any other customs we should know about?

If it’s a private tour, then I would buy them lunch. If it’s a group, then a tip if they are SUPER GUIDS.
We were with Ron in Rome and it was like being with family. We were happy to buy lunch, and he even got the kids Gelatto.

Thank you for the info, David. I think hosting our guide for lunch will make it a special experience.
