You might check these options with Walks of Italy, although a truly private tour is very expensive. Their museums at night is a small group of 14, so pretty private but only on Friday nights.

The Vatican itself does tours but also, Friday nights only.

Thanks Laurel. We have only two nights we could do this -- a Saturday and a Tuesday.
Friends who mentioned it said groups were in the 20 size. Any idea even the most small group cost?

Sandy, I could be wrong but I think evening tours are only available on Fridays, and from May - October.

Something on the internet suggested other days but at exorbitant prices.

Sandy, I actually did find one company that provides very expensive private tours (350 euro pp) but for only three dates until the end of 2015: Nov. 6th, Dec. 3rd and Dec. 23rd.
