Private English speaking guide in Rome

Have 5 days on Rome and would like a private guide with driver. Should be knowledgeable and speak good English. Also could you give me an idea of the charges. Thanks,
Geoff

Geoffrey, For a private Guide, I would highly recommend Francesco Caruso. She's extremely knowledgeable, speaks great English and provides interesting tours. You'll have to contact her to determine her current tour charges (contact info is in the Guidebook). Could you clarify why you also want a Driver? Rome is best toured on foot, and getting around by car will not be the most efficient travel method (given the traffic there)! Are you planning to visit other areas where you may need a car? Cheers!

Ken, Thanks for the recommendation. It was my understanding that sites are quote far apart in Rome and that being transported around is more comfortable and better to enjoy the vistas of Rome from the surrounding hills. I'm only going by what I've read on advertising Internet sites. I'd be happier to save the added cost, believe me. I'm new to this site, so what is the 'guidebook' you are referring to? Is that where I would get her contact info?
Thanks again for the advice

Geoffrey, you were misled about how far apart the sites are from one another. Most are right next to each other, in fact the colosseum, forum and palatine hill all touch each other. The trevi fountain, spanish steps, pantheon and piazza navona are within a 15 minute walk of each other and you get to walk down many charming streets and alley ways. You can enter the site names on viamichelin.com and choose the "by foot" option to get pretty accurate walking times and distances. Rome is one of the best cities for walking. There are a lot of areas that are pedestrian only so a private car would not be able to take you there. My best suggestion is to read through posts on this and sites like Trip Advisor. You'll find the answers to many of your questions and questions you might not have thought to ask. Rome is a wonderful city to explore on your own but I can understand if you would like to have a guide for your first day. Other than that, it's a very easy city to see and do on your own. Grab a good guide book to help you determine what you are interested in seeing. If you make a list of sites we can help you put them in a good working order. Donna

Geoffrey:
I second the vote for Francesca Caruso ([email protected]). Tell her what you want to do and let her make some recommendations. You do not need a driver! Hoof it, take the bus or metro, an occasional taxi. Do pick up Rick Steves' guidebook and read it to help plan your trip. Get the Rome book, and also the Italy guide if your itinerary includes other stops in Italy.
