Private Drivers on Amalfi Coast - Can they drive in either direction?

We are trying to decide if we want to stay in Ravello and make our way to Sorrento via a private driver, or start in Sorrento and make our way to Ravello via a private driver. We will be staying in Ravello for 3 nights and Sorrento for 3 nights as well. We were hoping to hire the driver to drive us along the coast and we could stop along the way and visit the different towns.

Here's my question: Can private drivers drive in either direction along the coast? I thought I read somewhere that private drivers could only drive in one direction because the traffic is so bad. I thought they could only drive in the direction of Sorrento to Salerno

Any thoughts?

I've taken the public bus along the Amalfi Coast. The bus went both ways.

I've never had any problems going both ways.

If it were one way it would make getting back from anywhere pretty difficult. The whole reason the traffic is so bad is that it is a two way road and in many places there is not room for two vehicles side by side so somebody has to back up, along with the people behind them, or crunch up right close to the cliff or the edge, usually on a corner.

Both directions as you already know.
Questioning your plans though....
If you are going to see the towns in route how are you going to occupy your 3 nights in Ravello?
Do you know how tiny Ravello is, beautiful and peaceful sure just not sure there is enough for you to do if you don't plan on leaving town.

My point being, save the money on the private driver and take the SITA bus from Sorrento to Ravello (need to stop and change buses in Amalfi) but it really is an easy process and there is room for luggage underneath the buses.
Getting used to the bus on the way to Ravello will help because I envision you using the same buses multiple times during your 3 night stay to visit Amalfi, Positano, etc... You can give them each a half day rather than just an hour each on your private driver ride in.

It's larger vehicles (public transport is exempt) that are subject to the seasonal one way restrictions. There are inland routes as an alternative . When you see the fun and games when two large tour buses meet you will understand why. Not that it seems to be enforced that rigorously!

Thanks, Linda. I knew I read about that somewhere but I couldn't remember the details.
