I would like to hire a private driver for my elderly parents for about 4-5 days in early July. They don't need a tour guide (though local knowledge is always great) or an itinerary (I will help them plan and book lodging), but I'd like to have a driver available to take them around. They'd like to be in and around Ascoli Piceno and L'Aquila. Has anyone had success booking a private driver? Any advice or recommendations? Thank you for your help!

I don't have direct experience on private drivers in Abruzzo or on private drivers in general, since I generally rent cars without drivers, however you can do a search and inquire on pricing, services provided, etc. You can generally do by email. Many such services have English speaking drivers.
When you do a search on a search engine, like Google, use the key words NOLEGGIO CON CONDUCENTE, which means 'car hire with driver', followed by the city where you need this service. You can also do the same search in English using the key words PRIVATE CAR TRANSFER or PRIVATE DRIVER. However the Italian words will probably yield more hits. Visit the webpages that you get as a result of your search, in most cases they will list services, prices, and a contact form where you can request a service, quotes, etc. via email.
We have had the most success hiring a private driver through our hotel. Once you have booked lodging — or even during the booking process — ask your hotel if they’d be able to help with this.
