Hi
Would like to visit ancestral hometown of Castelforte on way down to Sorrento and Amalfi coast on May 15. I don’t mind driving myself but it seems that car rental for a couple of days may not be worth it. So any recommendations for hiring someone for the day?
Also would like hotel recommendations for Sorrento.
Thinking of staying in Minori. Return to US from Rome on 23rd.
We used Aldo Limos and were very happy with them. Christine in the front office, (based in Sorrento) is a Brit, so no language issues communicating. They also accepted USD with a fair exchange rate. Rome area to Sorrento will be about 450 euros, we used them three times, so got a better price with a package deal.
Have a great trip!
Rafael Monetti, from Sorrento, does pickups from FCO. You can find his info in the RS guidebooks in the Sorrento/Amalfi Coast section. He's very friendly. We have used him twice and enjoyed it each time.
In 2022, we were very happy with Sorrento Top Excursion, as well as My Day Trip. Neither one is cheap. Once you decide on a hotel, it might have a recommendation for you.
This is a very long drive, so expensive. And (setting aside your desire for a special stop), it's much, much slower to drive than to book the frequent special Frecciarossa train service for the Rome/Termini-Naples leg. It's quite possible you want your hotel's land partner to pick you up in Sorrento because the commuter train (not, to put it mildly, special!) is so hot and jammed. Note that you don't want a car in Sorrento because of congestion and non-existent parking (other than the pay-underground garage in Sorrento.)
You might want to investigate how much time and how many stops you might need in Castelforte (never been there.)
You may wish to use the search box (top center) to read about daytrip travel from Sorrento. Even in the last week of May, we always found more people in line for the half-hourly bus to Positano than would fit on the "next" bus. So we hired a car for 8 hours of AC exploration. FIve nights at the Ambasciatori hotel in Sorrento.

You could consider taking the train to Naples and having a driver pick you up there. I had a taxi pickup from Naples airport to the Amalfi coast (Praiano) twice and it worked out great. I think it was €120 or 150 for the two hour drive. My host booked it for me.
Thank you everyone for your advice. I have contacted Monetti taxi and will probably stay at Hotel Aurora in Amalfi and hotel Villa Romana in Minori.
I will be staying initially in Sorrento for 1.5 days and would appreciate recommendations for hotels, probably within reasonable reach of the shopping area.
