The day trips to Volterra, Monteriggioni and San Gimignano were best done by tour or car.
Rental car or private driver looked best since I had a special interest in taking photos at twilight:

LTL Luxury Tuscany Limo price was fair - one driver offered it for 80% of their fee, another company wanted 190% of what we're paying.
The communications with Cristiano were prompt, helpful and complete (which gave me confirdence. The Tripadvisor reviews were great, including returning customers, and several were from the past month.
I did compare rental car rates - and they were astonishingly high (in some cases more than a private driver for the day)
So just booked our day trip with LTL Luxury Tuscany Limo
