Sulmona! Wow! I went there for a day from Rome by train, years ago. I'd been aware of Sulmona because there was a summer arts institute there, but when I booked the organizers said it was canceled that year due to low enrollment. I never found out whether they revived it in subsequent years.

At the time of my visit I found it to be a very traditional small town where a woman alone (me) walking into a restaurant to eat lunch was regarded with chagrin, if not horror. Things pretty much closed down for siesta in the afternoon and then a couple of hours later the entire population turned out for the serenata stroll, with teenagers arm in arm. It was definitely a memorable day trip from Rome and very easy to do by train.

Thanks for sharing your experience with me. I am visiting a cousin who I have not met and then visiting Cansano a nearby town where my grandfather was born. I have little time and from what I can tell direct train rides to Sulmona are in the afternoon. I do plan to take the train back next day to Rome.
