We will be in Capri for the day and I was wanting to charter a pivate boat for a few hours to travel around some of the outside of the island and take the teenagers for a quick swim/snokle. Will there be private boats hanging around offering this or would it be better to book something like this ahead of time? When I look online there are very few companies that offer this and it is very expensive. Any tips? Also would it be better to get in line for the Blue Grotto while on this private boat (I understand we will have to transfer to the smaller diggy) or what until we are done with our charter and then start all over with the Blue Grotto.
There are a number of private boat owners that offer their services to tourists stepping off the ferry. Most of them have no internet presence. We had originally intended to go straight to the Blue Grotto. But on the day we arrived in Capri the water was too rough (it looked fine to us but just a few waves can be too much) and the Grotto was closed. So the two hour boat tour we took just around the island of Capri was the best thing we did that entire week! Said even my daughter who got seasick and threw up over the railing ... We were asked to pay 90 Euros for the four of us and rounded it up with a tip to 100 as we liked so much. If the Grotto had been open the boat could have dropped us off at the point where you transfer into the little boats that fit into the Grotto.
In Capri hotels they were advertising private tours but they were expensive. When we went to the harbor we were approached by a nice man. We bargained down to a smaller boat that his 17 year old nephew drove. We circled around the island, stopping in smaller grottos and jumping overboard to swim. We had so much fun we added an hour ( 3 1/2 total) and it was a highlight of our trip for us and our teen daughters. Not sure about snorkeling though.
In 2006, and 2008, we rented a private boat. It was a co. called "Banana Boats" located.... as you get off the ferry make a sharp right when you get to the road, go past the ticket windows, make a right and it's straight ahead. We did not reserve ahead, I'm sure you couldn't if you wanted to. It was very inexpensive, imo. Something like $40/hr. The boats were new, clean, had cushioned seating for at least 8, a canopy, storage, an anchor and a ladder so you could stop anywhere and swim. We loved it both times.
