My husband has his US Coat Guard Captain's license and we will be visiting both Lakes Garda and Como later this month (September). Does anyone have any recs on getting a private boat rental for a day on either lake? Also: will a USCG license pass for a rental in Italy? Thank you!

Italy accepts the ICC (International Certificate of Competence for Operators of Pleasure Crafts).
Most EU countries have adopted the UN resolution (14 or 40) on this matter, but not the US. I'm not sure where you could get the ICC in the US. I suggest you contact a yachting organization in the US and ask or even call the company linked above.

The rates for the boats are not that bad.
It's the "+ gasoline" that really gets you.
Last time we were in Italy, we were paying $9.50 U.S. equivalent for a U.S. gallon of gasoline. Wonder how much more marine fuel on a lake is?
I've taken boating courses and am carrying a boat driver license--required in our state for all operators. I'd hate to think that after having 2 boats 30' from my front door that I couldn't run a decent size boat.
