We are thinking about renting a private boat (with skipper) from Sorrento to the Amalfi Coast roundtrip (with stops in Amalfi and Positano) end of June. Any suggestions or comments as to whether this is better than a private bus tour? Any recommendations on boat companies?
Month of year? Just for completeness, do you mean Round-Trip boat ride? I'd worry about sea turbulence, especially outside May-August, but it could happen any time. I'd price both boat and private car with driver. Because of elevation issues, you may want to consider whether you will ever have the "top of the hill" view. It's not practical on foot from Positano, say, with a schedule to keep. We (personal opinion, definitely) liked Ravello much better than Positano or Amalfi.
It is true that road traffic is bad, and the SITA busses so crowded you can't get on "the next" bus. But is it really true that "the best view is from the water?" That's a (perfectly valid) opinion, not an immutable "fact."
Have been lucky to view.the coast.from the buses and also a.two hour boat tour and it is hard to.decide on best view but would have to go with the boat for comfort. The Sita bus is super super crowded and the only way we got on one time was my pushing my granddaughter ahead of other people because they starting elbowing her aside..not a pleasant experience.
We did a small group (8) diving tour last April and a 9 hour tour meant 4.5 hours in a car and 4.5 of actual site seeing. 1 hour in Positano, 2 hours in Amalfi and 1.5 hours in Ravello. By far our favourite destination was Ravello which isn't on the water and would require ground transportation. A private boat may be desirable and I wonder if it would save you any time for more exploring. I would check itineraries and realistic time on land via the different methods. I certainly wouldn't consider the SITA bus a desirable method.
