I'm asking for some general information. Will be taking the kids and grandkids to Italy and wanted to get some prepaid Euro Visa (type) Cards, not necessarily just Visa. Is that something I can get in the US, or can I buy them in a store there, like we do in the grocery stores here? Thanks for your help.
Hi, one could see why you would want to limit spending, but prepaid cards are never a good idea. You don't need "Euros" on the card. I recommend a serve like PayPal where one can move a set amount of funds onto a MC and I have never had issues using this in France, Italy, UK etc.
I did try to use a Visa gift card once in Italy and it wouldn't work.

Yes you can buy in a store there.
Don't do it. Excessive fees and the cards may be declined.
Best to get euro from a Bancomat attached to a bank, during banking hours, or from a Postamat from the Italian Postal Service (Poste Italiane).
You can get prepaid cards in the USA and use them anyplace that accepts Visa. Here's a link to the Visa Website that might help answer your question. You just pay in $ and when you use the card, it will use the currency of the country that you're in.
