Good morning,
We are taking the RS 17 day tour of Italy starting in Lake Como.
Flying into Milan a few days early.
Milan is not on the RS tour.
Where to stay in Milan?
Is the walking tour of Milan a good plan?
Thank you for any suggestions.
Milan is OK, but I think I would spend one of those extra days getting to Varenna early.
We stayed at the Duca di York in Milan, and were happy with it, but it's the only place I know.
Are you planning to see The Last Supper? If so, I'd build my Milan time around that. You can get one of the third-party tours that takes you to a few sights as well as the Last Supper, with walking and by bus.
I stayed in Milan 2 nights before the Best of Italy last Fall, then went up to Varenna a day or 2 ahead as well.
I also stayed at Hotel Duca di York which I like for it’s proximity to the Duomo. I walked from the hotel to the Last Supper, having bought my ticket at the official site. I booked the English tour through them as well. I also managed to do the Duomo rooftop and inside using the Fast Track ticket with the elevator and worked in the Pinacoteca Ambrosiana which is literally across the street from the hotel.
You do not need to buy the train ticket ahead of time. I downloaded the TreNord app (train system for the area) and purchased the ticket using hotel wifi the morning I left.
Have a wonderful time!!
Thank you Pam and Stan for your replies.
I stayed in Milan for two nights after the RS Village Italy tour and enjoyed it a lot. I stayed at the Hotel Berna which is located near the train station. It had very pleasant staff and a great breakfast. The subway at the train station quickly took me to any place I wanted to see. Other people have mentioned the Last Supper and the rooftop of the Duomo which is quite spectacular. I also went to the Sforzesco Castle which is next to a huge park (Parco Sempione), good for a nice outdoor walk.
There is a big shopping street that connects the castle with the Duomo (it was pedestrian only, at least on the day I was there). As I walked down it, I heard music and it turned out to be a huge parade of Filipinos from all over Italy, Europe and even NYC. There were costumes, drumming and more - it went on for an hour. So you never know what you might stumble on when you’re just wandering.
