Pre Sorrento Stay---July

Hello all - we are going to Sorrento in July (3rd time) so that tells you how much we love it.

Does anyone have any recommendations on a place to stay before Sorrento for a few days. We have been to the Amaifi coast which was awesome--so just exploring another option. No preference on part of Italy but something within reasonable travel distance from Sorrento.

Thank you!!

What direction are you coming from, flying or train? Have you spent any time in Naples? How about Salerno?
Just south of Salerno is an area called Cilento. We stayed in Pisciotta and loved it, but having a car would be ideal (we did it without however).

I second Salerno. Good beach, easy day trip to Paestum or Naples, and easy peasy ferry from their port to any of the A.C. towns without having to fight the gridlock traffic.

Thank you both! Salerno sounds like the right choice!

More than likely flying into Naples. Have spent a little time in Naples but not much.

Have only driven through Salerno and it was very nice.

Again, thanks for your prompt feedback.

YAY! Salerno! (I really try not to push it onto people, but when they decide on their own, its even better! haha)

When you are there, don't miss the duomo and if you can get the buses right, Castello Arechi is neat and has a gorgeous view. You can even spend a few hours going up to Vietri for their ceramics. Take a long walk down the corso in the evening to whatever restaurant you like in the Centro Storico (CiCi Rinella has my vote for someplace neat!) and then grab some gelato after dinner and walk along the lungomare. PERFECTION!

I have turned quite a few people onto Seaview Salerno B&B, located on the top of a building in the centro storico with beautiful views of the Gulf of Salerno, and Peggy and her husband Alessandro are great! (and speak great english!) It is wonderful just sitting on the terrace for breakfast or a predinner refreshment with that view.

Merrie--

When you're in Salerno, late afternoon, please take part in the passeggiata, where the townsfolk and their families walk along the main street, waving and talking to the shopkeepers, and the locals congregate, making plans to have a glass of wine and/or have dinner.

We were absolutely charmed by this practice--which really takes part in smaller towns all over Italy, just not so much in the urban touristy areas--and during our 5 days in Salerno observed it every day.

This country would do well to take note of this...

Enjoy your planning!

The main reason I could see to stay in Salerno just before Sorrento might be to visit Paestum. I think Naples is a much more culturally and dining “rich” destination. It’s also more “different” from Sorrento . You are making a decision based on a small number of opinions.

Appreciate your comments Tim and true, Naples is very rich in culture, night life, etc.
In the past, we only spent 1 full day in Naples and that was for the museums, pizza, etc., - great city but on this trip, not sure if I would want to stay several nights there. if anything, would considering heading up to the Bolzano region again. Thank you for your input. M

With three nights, there is plenty in the vicinity, so I would not waste time flying to the north. If you did not want to drive, you could hop a train to Maratea.

Thank you - Maratea interesting known as "the Pearl of the Tyrrhenian" - looks like a good day trip.
