Greek Isles/Istanbul cruise leaves Rome May 12, thinking of flying to Milan May 6, spending one night/day, then four nights in the CT, and taking the train to Civitavecchia for the cruise. Is this a reasonable itinerary? Thanks to all who help!
If you are thinking Milan for the Last Supper. tickets sell out months in advance unless you are prepared to pay 3 to 5 times the price to book with a tour. Other than that looks good.
Have you been to Rome before and spent any time there? I hope if you haven't that you've set some days aside for her. If so, then no comment. After multiple trips to Italy (First three visiting relatives and needing to arrive in Milan) decided that Milan just wasn't for me. It's a very modern city, has a duomo, but Italy to me has so many cities with so many sites, and Milan is my least favorite. But that's MY opinion. I'd do Florence instead, unless you've already been there too.
Your itinerary looks smarter than the average itinerary. You're arriving days early, lengthening your trip, and going to the CT, etc. Have fun!
The other poster is absolutely correct about needing reservations for The Last Supper.
We like Milan and there is a lot of see. We think it is under rated. You do realize that you most likely and fastest way to Civit will be through Rome. You can come down the coast but it will be mostly by Regionale trains. The train station is about a quarter mile from the entrance to the cruise port. You can easily walk.
I agree with Frank, Milano has lots to see. Leonardo's Last Supper needs an advance reservation (ignore the petition people in the piazza). The Duomo has an elevator that will give you great views of the city and some face-time with the gargoyles. Castello Sforzesco is wonderful even without going inside - the grounds have gardens and it's a great place for a rejuvenating walk after a transatlantic flight. There are several important museums as well.
