Pre-purchase tickets/tours to Colloseum/Forum/Palatine/Capitoline and more

Hey all, I was wondering if it's recommended to pre-purchase tickets or tours for the Colloseum and surrounding area (Forum, Palatine, Capitoline, etc) as well as for the Villa Borghese and Natl Museum of Rome. My other question is if any of you think it's worth while to go do the tours of any of these places (i.e. if there's things we may not have access to with normal tickets like the underground portion of the Colloseum, etc) or if we're better off just going solo and using Rick's audio guides. Thoughts? Thanks!

I also noticed there's a RomaPass: "Free entry to the first 2 visited museums and / or archaeological sites of your choice. Free admission includes the exhibition held in the museum." Would that be worth it though for only two museums (if I signed up for a guided tour would it cost extra)?

If you wish to do the underground tour of the colosseum you should book that online before you go. This is a very popular tour and fills up quickly. For the Borghese gallery you must book a reservation in advance. They are capacity controlled so book as soon as you can for that as well. As for other tours, I would suggest the audio tour of the forum. Other sites will also rent audio guides. Most are quite good. If using the romapass you'll need to call to book the underground tour. There is no option to book this online. The romapass will save you money if you visit 3 sites covered by the pass or two sites along with transportation. You'll need to do the math to find out if you'll save money. Donna

Thanks Donna! Where do you see that 3 sites are covered? I'm reading the terms on the Romapass site (http://www.romapass.it/p.aspx?l=en&tid=2) and see the following: "Free entry to the first 2 visited museums and / or archaeological sites of your choice. Free admission includes the exhibition held in the museum." and then "Concessionary ticket to all other museums and / or archaeological sites visited thereafter. The concessionary ticket includes the exhibition held in the museum." I'm assuming the latter allows for reduced-fare ticket prices (but how much is the reduce-fare with the Romapass?) Thanks,
Jeremy

That's what I mean. The first two sites are free and all sites after that are at a reduced rate. This reduced rate combined with the free admissions makes the pass pay for itself. Donna

Ah I understand now. Thanks! Seems enticing, especially since I think we're interested in checking out multiple museums (maybe 3-4 at least). We'll see though... don't want to exhaust ourselves either.
