Pre-paid cab from airport to Rome?

My husband and I are just two months away from our trip to Rome and I'm wondering if anyone has recently used a reliable, prepaid cab transfer from Fumicino airport to downtown Rome? I've been to Rome twice before and had good luck with one car service and been stranded by another, so I'm looking for a reliable, recent experience. If I were on my own, I'd use the Leonardo shuttle, but my husband has mobility issues, so we need a chauffeur.

Looking forward to your suggestions!

The taxi rate from FCO to central Rome is 48 euros. It is a fixed rate. Just queue up outside the airport terminal. There is no need to reserve a car.

The fixed rate increased a few years ago to 50 euros.
We just walk out to the official taxi rank, get in line and wait our turn- never a long wait.
Hand the driver your hotel address on a slip of paper and hand him the 50 euros in cash- no need to tip.

Do not go with anyone offering a taxi ride before the official taxi rank.

If you prefer to use a car service, consider RomeCabs. Despite the name, it is a car service and the driver will meet you inside the terminal and escort you to the car. We've always just paid at the end of the trip, but I don't think they will object to payment in advance. We send an email stating our needs and get a reply in less than 24 hours.

With the fixed-rate taxi, you do not have to worry about the driver showing up. You just take a cab from the queue at the taxi stand—-and only from that queue. Tell the dispatcher you want the 50€ fixed rate into Rome, and confirm with the driver. This assumes your hotel is within the Aurelian Walls, which it most like Lu is, but you may want to confirm the location on a map.

Thank you all, it sounds like the fixed rate at the official taxi stand is the way to go, will bring a 50 Euro banknote. No additional fees for a two passengers or their bags? Neither of us speaks Italian, so negotiating won't be possible.

No additional fees

Also note that if your hotel is in pedestrianized area the driver will get you as close as possible

There is no need to pay only in cash. All taxis are required to take credit cards, of course, let them know you want to pay with card, even tell them you have no cash. Many reports of card machines being "broken" once you arrive, don't play the game.

If you have more than 3 there are taxi vans. You may just have to wait a few more minutes but they will get one for you.

Here is the official rate sheet, in Italian, English, and Spanish, together with a map showing the area.

Consider carrying a copy of the Italian page, to show the driver if he or she tries to collect a “supplement”. Friends of ours had the driver ask for €5 extra for service after 7 pm. They paid, as they were going to tip him anyway. But he lost out on the €10 tip.
