We're making our first trip to the Amalfi Coast and were thinking about staying in Positano at the end of May. We saw a beautiful hotel in Praiano, and wanted to see if it was worth the bit of hassle being away from Positano for this beautiful setting, or would we be happier with what seems to be more options of other things to do in Positano. Any help would be appreciated. Thanks!

Are you planning to have a car? If not, at night you will be stuck in Praiano because buses don’t run all night, and Praiano is very small with more limited options in terms of restaurants (one is a great restaurant however) or things to do in the evenings. So, as long as you are ok with that fact, the choice is yours.

Stay in Poistano. You want a great hotel, look up Le Sirunuse. Priano is nice but small, out of the way, and not thriving.
Positano all the way.

Well, La Sireneuse is above the price category of most posters on this board. We went there for a drink, and found the microscopic pool and patio with lovely view, to be laughably small. Because (and this is crucial, because many posters here don't agree with my beach preference) I don't care for the small, entirely big-pebble beaches of Positano (or the crowds), I would consider a luxury choice without walking access to those beaches. Assuming you are considering luxury hotels (I mean $750 and above per night), there are a few big places that are very far from the beach-not in Positano. If they have a shuttle or on-demand limo service just so you can get to and from Positano or Amalfi to see the beaches and towns, that would be more comfortable for me than La Sireneuse.
(We didn't stay in any of those hotels. We stayed in Sorrento for the daytrip transit ease, which is not at all like Positano. But we did stay in a luxury hotel (Ambasciatori) with a 5 star view and a huge balcony. But that hotel, like any in Sorrento, has no beach, only an elevator-access private bathing boardwalk in the Gulf.

it all depends on your budget! Praiano is a beautiful village but is 15 minutes far way from Positano. if you book now you can find a lot of cheap b&b and hotels also in Positano you will have much more choice than in praiano.
If you decide to stay in praiano I suggest casa Angelina very beautiful location and amazing view. to move from a village to another you can use local taxi service or a private limo Service
