After spending a few days in Praiano, I will be traveling to Rome, but would like to stop and spend a few hours in Ercolano on the way. The way I've figured out to do this is Sita bus to Sorrento, then Circumvesuviano to Portici-Ercolano, then Trenitalia to Rome, with a transfer in Naples. Is there a better way? (this will be on a Saturday in July)

Looks pretty straightforward to me apart from the bit in to Naples. Why not get back on the Circumvesuviana at Ercolano to Naples Centrale and go upstairs to catch your train to Rome?The station for Herculaneum is "Ercolano Scavi". You will be able to deposit your luggage at the Ticket Hall at Herculaneum.
