we are looking for the best/least complicated way to get from Prague to Cinque Terra. I've give up the train idea, too long and complex. Looks like we'll have to fly to a large city and then train to CT. Problem is, so far I've not found any easy/direct flights out of Prague to Florence, which is my preferred choice. Any other ideas or has anyone done this succesfully? We hope to arrive in CT mid day, to early evening, not late at night.
I think the best would be to fly to Milano and from there there is a direct train to Monterosso. The train goes through other Cinque Terra villages, too but doesn't stop there. Next stop after Monterosso is La Spezia. I did that trip in the opposite direction than you are planning. If there is a direct flight from Prague to Genova that would probably be even better.
Jana: I couldn't find a non-stop flight from Prague to Florence or Bologna. Sounds like Ilja's idea to fly from Prague to Milan is the best idea, you can use this website to look at possible flights http://www.flylc.com/directall-en.aspclick Prague in the Departure Airport column, then you'll see in the Arrival Airport column all the airports reachable from Prague, including Milan, Florence, and Bologna, but not Genova. However, the only nonstops I could find were into Milan, and unfortunately Milan's Malpensa airport (30 miles northwest of Milan city center) instead of Milan Linate (near the city center). In a quick search, using the above website, I found a direct flight (1.5 hrs) Prague to Milan Malpensa on EasyJet, for prices starting at £57 (prices were quoted in GB Pounds), that's only about $85! Other airlines appear to be much more expensive for the same route. If you fly into Milan Malpensa, take the shuttle bus connection between the airport and the Milan Centrale train station, 45 minutes to an hour to cover the 30 miles. Then a train from Milan Centrale to the Cinque Terre.
Use SkyEurope (http://www.skyeurope.com/) and fly in to Pisa. The CT is only a 90 minute train ride from the station in Pisa.
The Sky Europe site currently shows no Prague-Pisa flights.
Tim, you're right! I flew Sky Europe from Prague to Pisa last year but it looks like the route is no longer in use. I should have checked before I posted the link.
I found a flight that goes to Bergamo, Italy, on google earth it's pretty close to Milano. Has anyone flown into here and do you know if trains from here to Milano and then CT are easy to catch?
Thank you for all the suggestions. I used a lot of the info you folks posted here and found a cheap flight with Sky Europe to Bergamo and then we will take 3 trains from there to CT. The main lesson, there are a LOT of very expensaive flights that pop up but every so often a cheap gem comes along. thank you and happy travels.
we are doing the same thing-but we are starting in italy and going to prague. we are flying out of milan on a budget airlines easyjet and flying to prague. it was farely cheap--and depends on day of week you go. for weekend the tickets were high so we are going during middle of week for 1/2 price. from milan to ct is a little bit of a train ride but we are spending 2 days in cq--so it wasn't to bad.
I see there is a flight from prague to Milan that is reasonable for when I am travelling in May. I wondered how you sorted out your train travel to Cinque Terra from Milan and what the approx. cost is?
