Practical questions about arriving in Bari and traveling to Polignano a Mare by train

Hi! My guy (60) and myself (F57) are flying into Bari mid July on a Monday about noon. We’re staying 3 nights in Polignano and I’m trying to get a sense of our options when we first land in Puglia for our first time, either press on directly to our accommodations and catch lunch nearby or go into Bari proper and have a walk around and lunch prior to catching a train to Polignano? We’ll each have a wheeled carry on piece of luggage and a backpack - nothing too crazy, but it’s going to be hot. We’ll need to store our luggage if we stay in Bari for lunch, I think. So, does anyone have any experience with traveling by public transit between Bari’s airport and Bari Centrale? Are there any suggestions for a spot to eat near the station or within a 1k or 2k? Any knowledge and information is welcomed! Grazie - Silvia

I would keep going on to Polignano a Mare where , hopefully, you can at least stash your luggage. We spent ten days there, and loved every minute!

I was just in Bari a few days ago and really liked it, much more than I expected to. I had a car but googling it, it looks like the station is a 9 minute walk to Bari Vecchia, which is the nicest part of Bari (in my opinion). In the Piazza Albicocca, there is a little restaurant called Donna Carmela. It’s just a regular house and they cook everything outside. No menu. Just whatever traditional dishes from the region they are making that day. You get about 7 courses with wine for 20 euros. It was memorable. It is also right where the women are sitting outside making orchiette. I would make the effort to see Bari Vecchia. Polignano a Mare is beautiful but was very crowded with tourists.
