I have seen several postings regarding a wonderful pottery shop ( better than all the rest) in Orvieto " near the main piazza". Does any one know the name or address of this shop?
We just spent a day in Orvieto last week. I don't know the name of the shop you refer to, but I can guarantee that within 10 minutes walk of the piazza you will be overwhelmed. Check them out and compare the goods and prices. Many shops offer the same pieces but there is a huge variety of patterns, pieces and colors. The pottery is indeed beautiful. We bought a few pieces in different shops. Have a great trip.
If you've seen those postings here, why not respond in that thread or send a PM to the person who wrote about the shop? That seems more effective to me.
There is a big pottery store across from the Duomo and along the same street at least a half dozen more. Then there are the side streets. Many proclaim themselves the best. Buy what you like the most.
I agree with Zoe, when you see something you like then buy it. I did see things that appeared mass produced and carried by a few stores. I saw other things that were hand made. You'll know the difference by the price they are charging.
When we were last in Orvieto (2009), we were befriended by a local gentleman who showed us around his town. When the subject of "ceramica" came up, he began to point out the shops that sold authentic work that was locally made and the the shops that did not.
Your can preview some shops online to give yourself an idea of the selection, and perhaps to help decide how much time you want to devote to shopping around. I agree that you should buy what you like when you see it. A ceramic style that I admired in Orvieto on my first visit was hard to find and even more expensive in later visits.
I think the name of the shop you are looking for is "Ceramiche Giacomini Orvieto". We have purchased pottery from them on two separate trips and I can definitely recommend them. I made a purchase 15 years ago, and when I wanted to buy more of the same pattern 10 years later, the colors were consistent. I found information for you and the link is posted below......
Thanks so much for all the responses!!!
