[Camogli - Milan - Switzerland] Trenitalia tickets in June: purchase or wait?

My family is visiting Italy and Switzerland from 19 June to 4 July (ages 49, 44, and 14). My husband and I have been to Europe before, but our son has not.

My question is about Trenitalia. We’re trying to get from Camogli, Italy, to Lugano, Switzerland on 29 June. We will have to split the journey: Trenitalia from Camogli to Milan, and Trenord on to Lugano.

I had my eye on an itinerary and have been awaiting our Cartafreccia (emailed in our paperwork 2 weeks ago today). We have enough train journeys that I was planning to amass X-Go points on my son’s tickets. (X-Go is a rewards program: https://www.trenitalia.com/it/x-go.html )

Now I’m kicking myself: the Together rate (Insieme) I was watching, €37,90, now shows Sold Out! There are now:
--> Basic for €52,50 (2nd class Easy, unlimited changes, refund with deduction)
--> Together for €56 (1st class plus, no changes, no refunds)

Questions:
1. Is there any chance the 2nd class Together will come “back in stock,” or is it totally gone?
2. Should I keep waiting for the Cartafreccia to arrive since it’s just Basic tickets now?

Grazie mille!

Laura

Once a discount offer is gone it won’t come back.
If you qualify I see the Young (under 30) or Senior (over 60) still available on the IC. Otherwise the base fare is not much more. It’s very rare that trains get totally sold out, especially going to Milan on a June Saturday (the reverse route toward the sea might), so if you go for the base fare you can buy even on the same day at the station. The price won’t change.

Thank you, Roberto! Only our son qualifies for a discount, the Young (Under 30).

Sounds like we should wait for the Cartafreccia, since the train itself won't sell out. At least it shouldn't cost us any more, and if we are lucky, we can get a discount on his ticket. Hoping the digital cards arrive any time now ...

Knowing we could probably wait and even buy tickets on the day itself is a great relief. It makes sense that going toward the city in summer would be less popular!

Thank you!

Train tickets do not engage in dynamic pricing as we have been trained to accept from US airlines. The discount tickets are a limited number for each train and generally sell out fairly quickly. Fortunately Italian trains are reasonable at any price level.
