post cruise: Travel from Civitavecchia to Rome and then to airport

First of all thanks to all that offer wonderful advice on our trip to Italy. Next question. We are unable to fly out of Rome the day our cruise returns. So the cruise operator has an add on to the cruise that includes transportation from Civitavecchia to Rome, hotel in Rome, transportation the next day to Fiumicino Da Vinci Airport. The cost is $300 per person and our family is 6. So can I just do it on my own for less?

WOW - $1,800 for hotel and transportation!

You can book your own private transportation through multiple sources. Most folks here can give you options. I know Stefano (www.romecabs.com) and Alfredo (www.romashuttle.com) will do a great job for you... and at far less than the price quoted.

To really save money, you can ride the train in at €4.50 per person. With luggage and such that may not be an option for you... but it certainly could offset some of the hotel costs! Riding the train is easy; we've done Civitavecchia many times. It may be an option for you to consider.

The next day, depending on where you're staying... two taxis for 6 people to the airport will cost you €80. I'd choose that, as the Leonardo Express for six folks is €66 - might as well get dropped off out front for te extra €14. (Those rates apply IF you stay in Rome, inside the Aurelian walls).

I think I'd search out my own options. Hope that helps!

Ciao,
Ron in Rome

Rick Steves' Italy book lists options at the end of his chapter on Rome. Headings include: "Getting Between Civitavecchia and Downtown Rome" and "Getting Between Civitavecchia and Fiumicino Airport."

Thanks for your helpful suggestions for transportation. That was exactly what I needed to know. New quetion: We are getting the Roma Pass and plan to visit the Colloseum, Forum, Vatican City,Borghese Gallery,as much as possible, etc for 3 days in Rome before cruise. Since we have 3 kids and a total of 6 traveling, we want to make it easy and stay at same hotel all 3 nights. (1) Is there one part of Rome that is most convenient to stay for 3 days of sightseeing? We have Rick's book listing his favorite hotels. We are open to the pricier hotels for around E200 or more per night. (2) Anyone have a favorite hotel to recommend?

It would be helpful to know a little more about the make up of your group and, especially, the mobility. Lets take it in pieces. Getting to and from Civitavecchia is best accomplished by train. Fares run in the range of 4 to 10E which is less total than a van and driver for that distance. The drawback is hauling luggage through Termini and getting to the port entrance especially if not traveling light. The Civ.... train uses track 25 and 26 which is in the VERY, far right hand corner of the station as you face the tracks. And you have about a half mile walk to the port entrance from Civ... station. A shuttle bus will take you to your ship from the entrance. Because of the short distance it is difficult and expensive to get a taxi from the station to the port entrance. But it is an easy walk.

We always stay in the Termini area because it is walkable from Termini and don't have to deal with Rome taxis and luggage. We prefer Sonya but have also used Aberdeen. Aberdeen is a couple of blocks farther away. The Termini area is on the edge of the main tourist areas but still very walkable if you view a couple miles of walking as reasonable. Second Termini is also the hub of the Rome public transit system. Although with six it could be more reasonable to use two taxis.

Third, Rome to airport. Leonard Express at 11E/person is not the best option. You should do better with a van or shuttle service. Check RoninRome recs. He is very reliable with solid information. Hotel Sonya can arrange a shuttle that would handle all six very well. Have no idea of the price for six. When we used it last month it was 17E for one and 30E for two. Assume that six would be less than the train and it is door to door.

Your three day plan is ambitious. We have been to Rome five times for a total of about three weeks and we still haven't make it to the Borghese Galley. It does require advance reservations.

thanks Ron for the detailed travel info. I appreciate it. I will contact the ones you recommend for more info. Do you know if the Hotel Sonya has rooms that sleep 3? Kids are 5 and 7. There will be enough walking. Trying to keep extra walking to a minimum.

hotel Sonya, and hotel Aberdeen both look fantastic and both have Tripl Rooms that sleep 3. With current Rick Steve's or pay cash discounts, both are the same price. Awesome suggestion. Thanks!
