We will probably pick up our car rental at the airport in Florence-as we are Tuscan-bound for a week. We then head to Lucca for a couple of days. Question-can we turn in the rental in Lucca so that we can train or bus to Florence for the remainder of our vacation in that city? Thank you for your help.

Depends on which car rental company you go with. I often use Autoeurope to see if it’s possible to pick up a car in one city and drop off in another. They compare different company options and costs.

Of course you can.
Europcar, Hertz, and Avis-Budget have an office in Lucca.
Check prices on
www.autoeurope.com
You can also change your mind later and return it at another location on the spur of the moment if you need. I’ve never been charged a drop off fee for changing my mind on the return location.

Where will you be going from Lucca? The town is now full of ZTL's that you must be extremely careful attempting to park a car there. I would use train to go from Firenze to Lucca and then rent a car for a day or two from there for adventures needing a car. Lucca is on main train line from Pisa to Firenze and easily accessible to other places.

Thanks, all! I appreciate the tips and links. Marie-i chose a B&B just outside the walled city proper, with parking, in order that we can leave our car there and go into Lucca on foot. I believe the city is very walkable end to end. The B&B also has bikes we can use. So the second day, when we want to go into the hill towns/Apuan Alps, we will need that car. After Lucca we end our trip in Florence and I don't want a car, nor do we need it of course, while there. Turning in the rental in Lucca will be the better scenario I believe.

Good idea. Yes, no need to go near Florence with the car, just leave in Lucca and take the train to Florence, it is a beautiful ride. sit on the right side of the train
