Given the choice between visiting Positano or Stresa which would you prefer, and why?

Both are perfectly wonderful options and I wouldn’t know which is better, as I like both.
I would base that choice on the feasibility of each in the context of the overall itinerary.
If your plan is to focus on northern Italy, then it makes sense to select Stresa, especially if you are using Malpensa airport which is only 40 min away. On the other hand, if you are not venturing that far north, but rather concentrate in Rome and Central Italy, it makes more sense to go to Positano.

Have not been to Stresa but plan on stopping there in a couple of weeks so have researched it and been to towns on other Italian lakes as well as Positano.
I am not as big a lake person as I am a sea person when it comes to wowing me a lake never can like the sea will.
So this one is not even remotely close for me it would be Positano in an absolute landslide!
