positano to sicily

Hi, would like some help with my dilemma. Will be travelling from Monterosso to Naples (by train I have been told is the best option...although 3 trains needed) then was going onto Sorrento then Positano. My problem is that I then need to get to Palermo in Sicily and have been told I need to go back to Naples from Positano and either get the train or fly. Am I better off changing my plan, and going from Naples to Positano, then back to Sorrento before back tracking to Naples to get to Sicily.

Fly, if possible. The train from Naples to Palermo eats up a long day; it takes a long time to take that train by ferry to Sicily. Are there flights from Salerno? Naples may be best for flights to Palermo.

The train can be picked up in Salerno and involves the rare experience of having the train be put onto a ferry... it's worth checking out.

Well Kerri, Positano is very nice, but not a very convenient location for traveling. You don't indicate when you are traveling, for how long, for how many days in the Naples-Sorrento-Positano area, or whether you have some flexibility in your planning. You have built a lot of traveling time and complication into your plans. By the way, I think every one of the places you mention are wonderful and certainly great to visit. Just accepting your needs here without modifications, my suggestion would be to arrange a shuttle or car service directly from your hotel in Positano to the Naples Airport, a worthwhile expense, and then get an inexpensive flight to Palermo. I flew that route in reverse on Volotea Air in 2014, a one hour flight. The service was fine, and the price was low, as long as you have reasonable baggage and make arrangements for that when you buy your ticket. With cheap airlines, hoping for the best and making arrangements when you arrive at the airport can get expensive. On certain days, Volotea flights are really very, very low priced. Note: another option would be to stay in Sorrento instead of Positano, if you can, and then take the Currieri bus from the Sorrento train station directly to the Naples Airport. Good luck!
