Positano Restaurant Questions

Hi everyone, thank you in advance for reading. My mother and I will be in Positano from April 13 Sunday and will be checking out April 18th Friday.

We were interested in having a dinner in La Sponda but after seeing they are charging $150 minimum spend down per person for the evening we are reconsidering our options. We are thinking maybe for lunch at La Sponda we won’t need reservations because it doesn’t say anything on their website but we have been unable to find any valid information. So we have been looking for alternatives to restaurants for dinner that do not require over a $100 minimum spending per person. I do have some questions

  1. Is it possible to have lunch at La Sponda without a reservation and without a over $100 minimum spend down?

  2. What other restaurants would you recommend that has a nice view that wouldn’t require such a large minimum spending?

  3. Are there any restaurants in Positano that you recommend that don’t need a reservation just in case?

4.Are there any restaurants in Positano that you can recommend which are budget friendly?

I ask about the restaurants that don't require a reservation in the event that that many of the restaurants that require a reservation end up being fully booked.

Thanks!

You need to make a reservation in that type of restaurant. Places that are fully booked are likely to be the better restaurants.

There are so many restaurants with views in Positano..do you really want one of the two the most upscale and famous hotels in town?

If you do want that kind of meal, try Zass in the San Pietro Hotel once they open bookings for your date. As elegant as La Sponda.

I've never heard of a restaurant that sets a minimum charge, unless it's tasting menu only. And I don't see on the website of La Sponda anything that says that there is a minimum charge. Where did you see that? Maybe I missed it, or maybe you mean that they have a tasting menu at that price. I can't see their menu on their site but I saw an older menu on a blog; it's a la carte.

ekscrunchy, the minimum spend for visitors not staying at the hotel is stated on the booking page for the restaurant:
https://sirenuse.it/en/la-sponda-restaurant/book-a-table/

"La Sponda welcomes bookings from those not staying at Le Sirenuse, subject to a €150 per person minimum spend."

It doesn't look like it's open for lunch; another page of the site states that "La Sponda is open for dinner seven days a week." Hours on google are listed as 7:30 - 10:00 PM.

While I have never slept at La Sireneuse, having a drink on the sundeck of La Sirenuse was a big wish of mine during our five nights in Sorrento, in 2014. We aimed for between lunch and dinner, and indeed, the place was not busy.

I was shocked at how small the sundeck (which included a very small rectangular pool, maybe 20' x 10') of this famous hotel was. It did seem to me like everyone using the pool and the chaises (which were off limits to us) had "had some work done." I was also disappointed with the view. (I'm spoiled by the fact that we pay for "Beachfront" rooms in the Caribbean when they exist at a place we stay.) I'm sure they have very nice rooms, but I could not square our experience with the reputation of the place. We had to have our drink on a few tables allocated to non-hotel-guests, but the place was close to empty, so that was not a problem.

I'm puzzled to find your use of the Sirenuse's restaurant name, and a question about budget-friendly restaurants in the same post. I don't mean you should open your wallet, I just mean, "it does not compute." Positano is a generally very expensive location, and you have chosen to ask about one of the most expensive of the places there.

In general, I was greatly disappointed by Positano, but I'm not sorry we got to see it. I do not mean you should not go to Positano, I'm just mentioning my opinion. Positano is a must-see if you haven't been there! We had no desire to shop in the same overpriced boutique companies you can find in Paris and Rome, among other places. (We had about two hours free time, on a car-and-driver booking through our Sorrento Hotel, the Ambasciatori. We also saw Amalfi and Ravello in this 8 hour day.)

Adamo ed Eva Ristorante in Positano has wonderful food and a great view from the terrace. It is on Via G Marconi by Hotel Eden Roc.
When you make the reservation request an outdoor table with a view. We ate there twice because we enjoyed it so much.

Ok, I now see that mention of the minimum at La Sponda. That itself would turn me off; not because I would not expect to pay that, but I think it's creepy that they put that in writing. I guess they don't want tourists walking in and ordering a pasta and nothing else, taking up a table that could be filled by people willing to part with more money. I always think that places with a great view often let that view speak for itself, but I've never been to La Sponda, so... There are lots of good restaurants in and around the town....cold you go for a drink at the San Pietro and dine elsewhere if price is a concern? Taverna de Leone is an upscale, pretty family-run restaurant with excellent food, not far from the San Pietro.

The San Pietro is in the same class as Le Sireneuse; take a look at their restaurant. It's a stunning property; I had drinks there but not dinner.

I've been to Positano a few times but it's not my favorite part of Amalfi Coast..like the poster, above, mentioned--filled with tourist stores, jam packed with day trippers......nice to see the place from the water but I stay elsewhere if I am around there.
