My girlfriend and I bought too many gifts in Milan and Florence we need to ship home from Positano. We just arrived (Saturday). Does anyone know the nearest place we can find to buy a big box and ship back home to Pittsburgh?
There appears to be a post office at Via G. Marconi, 318 but I've no idea if they'll pack it. Best idea is to ask at your hotel. Shipping, BTW, will not be inexpensive. It may be cheaper to buy an extra bag and check it for the flight home.
Editing to add: looks like there's a Mailboxes Etc. in Sorrento, if you want to haul it all over there. They will pack and ship it. A highly respected, since-passed RS poster (Zoe) said she used Mailboxes Etc. for shipping on every summer-long trip (see: https://community.ricksteves.com/travel-forum/italy/shipping-souvenirs-during-travel-in-italy).

According to posted hours, they're already closed for the day and won't be open again until Monday (9:00 - 18:30).
Another recommendation for Mailboxes Etc in Sorrento. I had them box and ship the bulk of my travel purchases for that part of a 2 week trip, including 5 ceramic tiles. Cost 40 euros and arrived in 2 weeks. Cheaper and less hassle than buying, transporting, and checking a second suitcase. This might be an option for you.
Happy travels!
Well there you have it! :O)
The Post office costs 50% less than private couriers because it takes twice as long.
If they ask you to declare what's in the package, just write "Used clothes and objects- VESTITI E ACCESSORI USATI"; otherwise it will stay for weeks at the customs.
I would use Mailboxes, Etc. We have used them many times from Italy with great success although the cost is more than PI.
We just got home from a long trip to Europe and in a small town in Italy I went to Poste Italiane who sold me a big yellow box for shipping. They were very kind and helpful and it was about half as much as I would have expected to pay to MBE. My worry was the fasteners were 3 little stickers, one each on the open sides of the carton. PI personnel assured me they were sufficient. However, the box arrived 4 weeks later looking like Godzilla had stepped on it and those stickers did not hold up well. Luckily I had not packed anything fragile! According to a sticker placed on the box, The Seattle Network Distro Center rewrapped it. Nothing was lost, but it could have been.
Use MBE!
Package handling is highly automated within the U. S. Postal Service system--perhaps more so than in Europe? A heavy box making contact with a lighter box may well crush it. I'd never mail breakables without double-boxing them. I have no idea whether the equipment used by the private shipping companies is any more forgiving.
I had to ship 2 packages home last week from Sicily (gifts from family members). In a 10 day trip to Italy, this ended up being the only bad thing that happened to us. We waited in line 2 hours at the Italy Post Office - possible the most inefficient operation I have ever seen. I wanted to go to the UPS store, but my wife's cousin insisted on Poste Italiane, as it would not cost so much. But it still cost an arm and a leg....
So my advice based on one shipping experience is to don't go anywhere near the Post Office in Italy.
If they ask you to declare what's in the package, just write "Used clothes and objects- VESTITI E ACCESSORI USATI"; otherwise it will stay for weeks at the customs.
This advice is appropriate only if you are shipping your clothes etc home. If the package has you just purchased gifts, it is not a true/accurate statement and most likely violates US Customs laws.
The poster who made that suggestion could be in violation of RS forum rule 8-Do not help people break laws. Speaking of the existence of law breaking is OK. Sharing how to circumvent visa restrictions, scam hotels, or perform other illegal acts is prohibited. "
Depending on what and how much you have, I think an extra checked bag on the way home is the method I would prefer.
Anything you ship home is subject to Duty: if you carry it with you can bring $800 duty free, per person.
The moment you open the original boxes, cut the price tag and show gifts around they are used according to Italian law. I didn't tell gogregorygo to write "originally purchased in US" . It's the Italian Customs in Milan that can make them wasting weeks.
Dario, I misunderstood. I thought your comments were directed relative US Customs 'import' issues not Italian 'export' issues.
Thank you for your suggestions. There was a Milboxes Etc... (I think it was Etc...) and a DHL further down the hill. The Mailboxes Etc... owner was to open at 9. At 10:15 we had to leave because he still had not arrived. But, the DHL down the hill and closer to the shopping and beach (on left side or road) was open and very helpful. It cost $180 euro for a BIG heavy box, but it arrived back in Pittsburgh in 4 days. Yes, only 4 days!
Hope this helps if anyone needs to mail anything back home to USA from Positano. My tips are:
Put the items you want to ship home in some cheap touristy big totes with a zipper. Makes getting it all to the mailing facility much easier. And you’ll have a fun story how you got your tote bag.
Give yourself plenty of extra time in case they’re not open as they should be. And be prepared to take the items you wanted to ship with you if they are closed when they shouldn’t be (thus, the zippered totes).
I noticed I got several blank stares when I mentioned UPS or FedEx. But, they did recognize DHL.
I'm glad it worked out for you!
However, paying for an extra bag on the plane costs about €60 and you have 23 kg, so depending on your itinerary etc, it might be a better choice!
