Positano Pompeii Rome

Could use your help.
We will be leaving Positano (end of October) to Rome and want to see Pompeii on our way. What is the best way to do this.

Someone gave me some train and bus sites but it is really confusing and hard to understand. It also looks like a really long trip. Are we better off taking a car part of the way? If anyone has done this and can walk me through step by step I would greatly appreciate it!

You can take the bus from Positano to Sorrento. Then take the train to Pompeii and then the train from Pompeii to Naples. Take the train from Naples to Rome. It can be done, but will be a long day...although much of it is just sitting.

It sounds like - Maybe easier to hire a car at least to Pompeii (quicker and easier)
Is it a long ride from Pompeii to Naples or should I pay the extra for the car to wait?
The train schedules are really hard to figure out.

For Pompeii, ferry to Sorrento then take the Circumvesuvian

http://www.sorrentoinsider.com/en/naples-to-sorrento-train-schedule?bus_route=sorrento_napoli

to Pompeii. It will save you at least an hour over the bus.

There is a luggage check downstairs at the Pompeii Scavi station. Block or two to the main entrance.

Guides are available at the gate. Most tours are 2 hrs. Then roam to see more.

To reach Naples, take the Circumvesuvian, go upstairs to the Napoli Centrale station. Buy your tickets there, or purchase inline to save some money. Rome is an hour and fifteen minutes.
Edit: for the train between Naples and Rome use

You have to use Italian names.

Napoli Centrale-Roma Termini.

Hi Lexington,

(For Pompeii, ferry to Sorrento then take the Circumvesuvian to Pompeii. It will save you at least an hour over the bus.) We will be travelling end of October - will the ferries still be operating? How can I find out the schedule?

(To reach Naples, take the Circumvesuvian, go upstairs to the Napoli Centrale station. Buy your tickets there, or purchase inline to save some money. Rome is an hour and fifteen minutes.) I was told I should buy our tickets to Rome in advance to save money - is that correct?

Thank you!

Ferries operate thru the end of October. Schedule here.

If seas are rough they won't dock in Positano, so the bus or private driver would be your only option.

For trains use

http://www.trenitalia.com/tcom-en

Use Italian spelling.

Napoli Centrale-Roma Termini.

Yes they're discounted if pre purchase early enough.
Three levels of tickets
Super economy, deeply discounted. Economy, discounted. Base, full fare.

Make sure you notify your CC provider of overseas purchase.
Or it won't go thru.

Thank you Lexington. Sounds like I will be arranging a car at least to Pompeii.

We drove the whole way Rome Termini to Positano and stopped at Pompeii on the way. Easy drive and we could go at our own pace. No rushing to connect to trains/busses. Not sure where you'd pick up the car from...Sorrento maybe? But you should be fine to drop off at Rome Termini or any other depot in Rome. Termini was surprisingly easy to drive to from Tuscany and drive out of towards Amalfi.

Thanks Jenn. Sorry for the misunderstanding --- I have arranged for a driver. We won't have our own car - wouldn't be worth it.

It's a good decision to hire a driver from Positano to Pompeii. For anyone else thinking about this journey, it's been suggested to take the ferry to Sorrento, then the Circumvesuviana to Pompeii - but no one has explained how to get from the ferry all the way up the hill to the train station - per google maps, it's a kilometer, and includes steep stairs, with luggage.

It's pretty easy to get from Pompeii to the Naples train station on the Circumvesuviana. The station is just a few meters from the entrance to the Pompeii. If you have the budget and want the security/comfort, keep the driver. If you release the driver and leave your luggage in storage in Pompeii, I'd recommend to keep your valuables with you as you tour the sight.

Thanks for your candid opinion greatly appreciated. My gut said driver (even though expensive) and that is what I will book. Have a wonderful dreaming of travel day! Laurie

To get from the Circumvesuvian to sorrento port take the little "Tasso" bus.
Around 10 minutes. The walk is too long and steep to do it with luggage and the elevator is not always operating.

Edit the bus also picks up at the port.
