We are traveling to Italy in July. We are a family of four with 2 teens. We will be in Italy for 15 nights. Round trip to Rome. We will spend time in Rome and Venice and 3 days planned to visit family in Bari. A night in Naples. We are planning 4 nights on the Amalfi Coast. Hard to find accommodations for a family of four. Our agent recommended getting two hotel rooms in Positano. $$$$ although absolutely beautiful. We are prepared to splurge a little here, but not sure between Positano or Sorrento? Help! Would love suggestions.
With two teens, I would pick Sorrento. But it depends on what you want to see in the area.
An option other than a hotel would be a family apartment. It will give you a lot more room and the ability to have snacks and drinks for the kids. Or the ability to cook if you choose.
We have had great success all over Italy using this site.
Set your filters for price, and type of accommodation. Apt., Villa or private home. In July expect to spend between 55-88 per person.
Edit: Sorrento is the transportation hub for the area.

Use ferrys between towns is much faster than the bus.
I have rented an apartment in Positano for a week then returned 3 years later and stayed at a hotel in Sorrento. I definitely think with 2 teens Sorrento is clearly the better option. There us more for them and it's not as expensive. You can get 2 reasonably priced rooms with breakfast in Sorrento.
Enjoy your trip.

In my humble opinion I would suggest Sorrento. My wife and I stayed there last summer on our honeymoon and its was amazing! Positano is far more beautiful however much more expensive. We decided on Sorrento due to its central location to all the places we intended on visiting such as Positano and Capri. Sorrento is an awesome, authentic Italian town with the best Lemoncello gelatos and great shopping options. We took a hydrofoil from Sorrento to Positano and when it departed it circled Capri then arrived on Positano beach which was a beautiful sight. There's a good restaurant near the top of Positano called Hotel Ancora with the ABSOLUTE best view of Positano beach, dont miss it!! We took the bus back to Sorrento from Positano and its was insane! I have no idea how these drivers can navigate around those mountains on such narrow roads! Crazy and sort of scary experience but I'd recommend it for sure. If the money isnt an issue, Positano. But you most definitely wont go wrong if you choose Sorrento.
P.S. in Naples, one of the highest rated pizzerias I most definitely recommend you "Gino e Toto Sorbilo." Google it if you doubt me. Have fun!!!
