My husband and I are planning an early November trip and would like to go back to Positano or a first visit to Puglia. Are these towns totally shut down the beginning of November?
Positano doesn't actually shut down as a town, but activities for tourists may be curtailed somewhat, some restaurants or hotels may be closed, but you should be able to find enough to do.
Puglia is a region, not a town (wasn't clear from your post that you were aware of that). Since most places in Puglia are not tourist-driven, there really isn't a strict "season". Travel to the Tremiti Islands may be iffy because of weather issues (could also affect Positano). But most cities in Puglia will be open and welcoming. It's a beautiful area, I seldom run into North Americans there. Are you interested in Alberobello (trulli districts), Taranto, Bari? Smaller towns like Trani, Otranto, Locorotondo, Ostuni? Just over the regional boundary from Puglia is Matera, which might make a great destination (you can stay in a cave hotel if you are so inclined).
How many nights do you have?
Thanks, Zoe. I have done research on Puglia and I was thinking of doing the north then going down south to Lecce. I have 9 nights or more if need be. I know its not a tourist destination per se so I was concerned the towns would be deserted. I am very interested in Matera as well.
Matera is about an hour from Bari, it would make a great stop on the way down. I go to Matera every year now. Will you have a car? You can do the trip on public transportation, but there are a couple of places that are off the public transportation routes. I know a wonderful B&B outside Bari and a great restaurant near Castel del Monte if you are interested.
Thanks Zoe. We will not be using a car. So if you have a recommendation we are to stay in the north for about four days and then we were going to stay in Lecce for 2 to 3? Your thoughts. Because we won't have a car in the north I would like to stay in a hotel that is within easy walking distance at night for dinner I was thinking of being by the sea and during the day usually use public transportation or get a driver. Recommendation?
I haven't used Lecce as a base in years, so I can't recommend a place there. Near Alberobello I was traveling with friends and we had a car, so we stayed in a trullo about ten minutes' drive to the town. Sorry.
