October of 2009 will be staying in Positano for 5 days. From what I've read on the Helpline it seems the better choice would have been Sorrento. I have been to Positano before and we chose it because of the scenery. We like being on the go for most of the day, early breakfast, sightseeing, lunch on the go and dinner later on in the evening. My questions are, should we plan on a different place to visit each day, will we have the advantage of public transportation either by bus or ferry and will we be able to stay late say in Sorrento to have dinner and still be able to get back to our hotel? Thanks in advance!
We stayed in Sorrento for 3 days and Positano for 3 days in 2006. We did use the local bus to Amalfi then the bus to Ravello for lunch and the afternoon. Later walked around Amalfi and took the ferry back (5PM)to Positano . You could ask the place where you are booked in Positano for Ferry and bus times from Amalfi and Sorrento ahead of time to make your schedules up for the day. I know ther is a ferry to Capri as well from Positano.
Where are you staying?? I have a few suggstions for off the track restaurants.
Maybe you can split your time in Sorrento and Positano. The walking is steep for Positano and there is alot more to do evenings in Sorrento. I think of Positano as a more layback read/relax/romantic area, but yes I agree it is beautiful and def. more pricey than Sorrento. Yes I would visit a diff place ea day. Do not forget Ravello also on bus route.
We took our trip in October as well and we stayed at different towns every night without prior reservations. If you travel lite it is really no problem at all. We really enjoyed seeing all the towns after all the day tourests left the towns in the late afternoon. You can see our pictures at our blog at www.gadtravel.com
Also there is a link to our planning spreedsheet (Southern Italy) where I have included links to all the places we stayed.
Shelley - We are staying at the Savoia in Positano. Any suggestions you have would be greatly appreciated. Also, how do you suggest we plan our day trips. Thanks so much in advance.
We are staying at the Savoia in Positano. Am I understanding everyone on the site that there are buses we can get from our hotel to visit Ravello, Capri, Ana Capri and Amalfi? We do have dinner reservations for one night at the top of Amalfi where we will be picked up at our hotel. Any other suggestions for dinners? One more question, if we go to Sorrento for the day is their transportation to get back to our hotel in Positano later on in the evening?
Rachelle,
It's great to hear that you're staying at Hotel Savoie, as it's a great hotel.
First, regarding your question about returning to Positano to Sorrento. Have a look at These Timetables to see if the times will work for you.
Regarding touring various places on the Amalfi Coast:
Capri: VERY easy! Walk down to the docks in Positano and buy a boat ticket. The trip is about 45 minutes or so, as I recall. Be sure to note the last boat of the day so you don't miss it! The queue's at the Funicular from Capri to Marina Grande can be quite "busy" in the late afternoon, so you might consider taking one of the open-top Taxis instead.
Amalfi, Ravello or other points. Your best bet is the Italy 2009 Guidebook, as the options are listed there, from boats to Buses.
If you're interested in a recommendation for a great place to dine in Sorrento and your budget will allow, have a look at This for the details.
Happy travels!

The coastal boat service closes down about mid October, maybe earlier if the weather breaks down. Ferries from Sorrento to Capri and Naples continue, weather permitting.
I'm keeping my fingers crossed because we will be in Sorrento from the 14th Oct and would like to use the service.
Ken, thank you so much for all your valuable information. I've printed out the bus schedule and looked at the Trattoria that you recommended, I could cry, absolutely beautiful. In the evenings when we're back in Positano will we be able to walk around and have a glass of wine or a gelato late in the evening. Do shops usually stay open late. Thanks in advance
Looks like you have gotten the information you requested. Just wanted to add: lucky you. We visited Sorrento and Positano last spring and can't wait to get back!
