Positano Ferry Update

Just wanted to share that a couple of days ago the waves damaged the municipal pier in Positano. This means that there are no ferries running to or from Positano until the pier is repaired. In turn it also means that the busses are unbelievably packed with very long lines to board. This also means that traffic is very heavy along the Amalfi coast. It took our driver almost two hours to take us from Positano to Naples.

With no ferry service, we encountered tourists missing their tours to Capri and other locations. So be sure to think of other transportation options if you were planning to use the ferries.

Also be careful if you plan on doing any hikes in the area. Yesterday we saw helicopters rescuing injured tourists in three separate incidents. In each instance, the tourists were leaning over the low barriers to take a picture and fell several meters down. One of the tourists fell 60 meters down and is in serious condition.

Sorry to be the bearer of bad news, but figured this was an update that some might find useful.

Thx, this is important to share, we just returned and those ferries weren't running last week. I thought it was weather related .
Safe travels!

Kathy, We got to Positano on Sunday around 7 p.m. We stayed at Villa Pietra Santa right above Arienzo Beach on the side heading to Almafi (highly recommend this place, just beautiful and great value for the price). All day Monday I saw the ferries running from the Positano pier. Late on Monday there was a storm with a lot of rain. Later that evening we received an email about "safety issues at the pier". Fortunately we could just walk to the Arienzo Beach Club from our hotel. We took the Club's small ferry back to the center of Positano and saw all the signs posted about no ferries running for multiple days. A worker at the club told me the bad waves from the night before knocked out the usable part of the pier needed by the ferries. When we walked up to take "Columbus" Street back to our hotel, there were at least 100 people waiting for the SITA busses that were already packed. We were glad we had use Aldo Limos for a private tour from our Sorrento hotel through the back road and to Ravello and Almafi before dropping us off in Positano. We were also glad we had book a private transfer from Positano to Naples because it would have been impossible to travel any other way.
People on this forum recommended we stay initially in Sorrento and that turned out great. We could do very small group tours to Capri and Pompeii/Herculeum that were wonderful and not worry about ferries. After our all day Almafi coast private tour, we could just enjoy the good weather, beaches and great food in Positano.
I traveled last year in May in Europe and this year the crowds are substantially larger. I think many parts of the world are now allowed to travel "post-covid" and they are all coming to Europe. Be sure to reserve hotels, restaurants, tours, tickets and transportation. I think the days of "let's just wing it" are suspended until everyone satisfies their travel desires following 2020 events.

I should have said we took the Club's small boat to their private pier. One silver lining is that there are a lot less tourist on Positano during the day since there is no ferry service.

We also used Aldo Limos and I highly recommend them.

Glad you otherwise had a great time on the coast, itsv! We liked Sorrento too but were pretty much done with Positano (did it as a day trip via ferry) after 1/2 a day: not enough to do, and we're not beach or shopping people. I can see it for a purely relaxation stay tho. Sounds like that's exactly what you did. :O)
