Positano Beaches

If my wife and I were to go to Positano for a relaxing vacation of laying on the beach, would this be something easy to do in Positano? The one time I went to a beach in Italy, there were different sections that you had to pay to lay on. I know this is a silly question, but how does it work exactly? In Positano, Sorrento, or Amalfi? All of which I know are very close. Thank you for your help!

The beaches on the amalfi coast are very small. Italians use them becuz that is what is avail in their country. It would be better to stay in Sorrento by the water and use their swimming pool and facilities. For beach laying you cannot beat your florida(you are there) and our Hawaii and Calif beaches for fine wide beaches. Good that you asked bef being very disappointed.

If you want chaises you pay. The rocks are hard. However the water had some oil slick I guess from the ferries??? We went to the beach around the next cove and a huge jellyfish bit my husband several times. It took six months for the scars to go away. No big beaches in Sorrento that I recall. Best water experience is from the ferry arriving (very cool) or sitting by a pool with an amazing view in Sorrento (try Hotel Minerva).

For beach-lying, the best options are not in the Tyrrhenian Sea, but on Ionian Sea (Taranto/Reggio Calabria) or Adriatic Sea (anywhere south of Ravena)

While this area is not known as a prime beach vacation destination there are a few beaches in the area, none of them large, most of them rocky or pebbly. The ones right in town usually have sections where you pay and can rent an umbrella and/or chaise but usually also a tiny stretch that is free and you bring your own stuff. Check with the locals if you want a more quiet experience than what you get on the small and busy beach of Positano. Our b&b host recommended a small beach to us that was only accessible by hiking in (about 45 min from our car parked in Nerano) or getting a boat in Marina del Cantone to take you there and pick you up later in the day. I can't remember if it was a sandy or more pebbly beach but it was soooo beautiful with the island of Capri in view. Of course they were no services whatsoever and no fees to pay.

I agree with the other posters that the Sorrento peninsula and the Amalfi coast is not the right destination if you have a leisurly beach vacation in mind. However, if you just want to take a day or two off from sightseeing and take it slow you can find some beautiful spots.

Also depend on what time of year you are going, OCtober and november the weather starts to turn cold we were in Amalfi in October 07 and the small beach there was nice to walk on but to cold for laying out or swimming. I agree with the rest of the posts maybe try farther south if going in the winter months.
