I have a dilemma... I will be traveling from Rome to Salerno, then ferry to Positano. My dilemma is this....I also want to go to Pompeii. Should I do this on the way to Positano, on the way back from Positano or while I am in Positano. I will be in Positano for 3 days.
Pompeii is north of Positano half way between Positano and Naples, it is not between Positano and Salerno.
In any case, it is up to you when you want to visit it, also depending on time of arrival, time of departure, planned itinerary after Positano, etc.
One year I was in Positano for a few days, I visited Pompeii on the way back to Florence. I didn't have a car at the time, but I used the SITA bus from Positano to Meta, then the Circumvesuviana train from Meta to Pompeii. Visited a few hours, then later in the afternoon I took the train to Naples and from there the train back to Florence (and at the time it was a longer trip since the Naples-Rome was not high speed). From Positano you can be in Pompeii in an hour or so, therefore you could visit it as a day trip as well.
Robert, so if I decide to do Pompeii from Positano, I take the bus to Mita...not Sorrento then Pompeii?
If you do decide to catch the bus be aware that not all the buses from Positano to Sorrento go via Meta. This timetable shows the 3 routes the bus uses. If the times via Meta do not suit you can get on the Circumvesuviana train service at Sorrento.
Your transport connections will be similar whichever way you approach it, but you'd probably rather do the daytrip to Pompeii without luggage in tow (even though there is bag storage there).
