Staying in Positano for 4 nights, so actually only 2 days of touristing. Any top of the list recommendations on how to best spend these two days in late September?
Spend one day in Capri.
Welcome!
Spend another day in Ravello visiting the Villas-especially Cimbrone
Positano is considered a highly desirable location, with a history of high-end Euro tourism. But it does not have as good cheap-daytrip transportation options as, for example, Sorrento or Salerno. An example is Pompeii, which is accessible for a few Euros on a commuter train (50 mins?) from Sorrento. But from Positano, you have to spend over 100 Euros on a taxi, or take a half-hourly (?) bus for 30 or 40 minutes to Sorrento, where it stops in front of the train station. In high season, the bus can be too crowded to get on the first one. I don't know about late September, because we have fewer posts here on that time of year.
I am just anticipating your imaginary next question, but many people today believe there is no cost to asking a taxi driver to wait two hours (a pitifully small time to see massive Pompeii) while you do something. It is not true that Positano is "remote", but it is "distant", and everyone knows what prices "the traffic will bear."
Note that the ferry to Sorrento drops you at a nice marina that is 200' lower elevation from the town, with an elevator or a public bus to take you (for example) to the train station.
