Portovenere

We will be staying in Monterosso while visiting the Cinque Terre. Does anyone know if we can get a boat from Monterosso to Portovenere? If not, what town does have boats that will go there? Grazie,

The only caveat is weather. I took this trip and we only stopped at one city as the sea was too rough. It is a great trip though.

We took the ferry from Monterosso to Portovenere, had a nice lunch and returned on a later ferry. As mentioned above, the ferry will not run if the sea is rough. It didn't run our first two days in the CT although the weather was great. It did run on the third day but it wouldn't pull into any of the other 4 towns. It went in close but that was it. We did get spectacular pictures.

Donna, I have a few additional comments to add.... As the others have said, you will be able to travel by boat from Monterosso to Porto Venere, however that may depend on when you'll be there. The boats don't run all year, and as mentioned service could be suspended if the seas are rough. The boat normally stops at all the towns except Corniglia. You'll get fantastic views of the towns, so be sure to have your Camera ready! Happy travels!

On our last trip to the C.T. a few yrs ago in July we were staying in Vernazza and took the boat to Portovenere and back again. Do have your camera ready as seeing the villages from the boat is breathtaking. We enjoyed Portovenere and check our the church out on the rock. Very old with beautiful views.

Donna, The boats should still be operating in mid-September AFAIK, so that will give you an opportunity to visit Porto Venere. It is possible to get there via train to La Spezia and then Bus, but that's a more "awkward" solution and doesn't provide the gorgeous scenery from the water. If you have a full day in Porto Venere, you could also take the short boat ride across to Palmaria Island for a few hours. There's also Tino & Tinetto, but not sure if you'll have time for all of them. If you like seafood, you won't have any trouble finding restaurants in the harbour area of Porto Venere to have a fine lunch. There are lots of interesting small stores in the back streets above the harbour. There may be a few yachts in the harbour during your visit. Cheers!
