I will be in the Cinque Terre for 3 days and would like to travel to Portofino or Portovenere if time allows. If you've been to both, which one do you suggest? I'll be staying in Monterosso & I know I can take a boat directly to Portovenere and I was thinking the boat ride might be nice & it might afford a nice opportunity to take pictures of the CT towns from the water so I'm kind of leaning towards Portovenere but I hear so much about Portofino that I'm wondering if I should visit Portofino instead. Any input is greatly appreciated. By the way, I'll be there in mid-Sept and I'll probably only have a 1/2 day to spend in either of these towns.

We stayed an entire week at Hotel La Piccalo just outside Portofino and enjoyed every day of it. This was in September 2007. I'm not sure 1/2 day would do it justice, although that's all Rick Steves book recommended at most. Portovenere came highly recommended by some other hotel guests from Milan but we didn't get there. We did take the boat from Santa Margherita Ligure but due to rough seas, they dropped us in Monterosso and we hiked to the next town of Vernazza before taking the train back to Santa Margherita.
