We are planning to travel to Portofino area in July and would like to know if it is better to stay in Portofino or outside the town in a nearby village/town? Any suggestions

Save money and enjoy a much nicer stay in Santa Margherita Ligure (about 2 miles south of Portofino)...much more to do and see, and you can easily walk to Portofino then ferry back to change the view. We stayed at the Hotel Metropole. A wonderful old hotel with their own private access to the sea (not exactly a beach...but more like a clean platform with lounge chairs set up and step ladders into the sea).

We stayed a week in September 2007 at Hotel La Piccolo just outside Portofino, but an easy walk into town. We also walked the other direction into Santa Margherita Ligure but there was also a bus stop just down the road from the hotel. We absolutely loved Portofino as well as the market area in Santa Margherita. La Piccolo had a very rocky beach, but had a fantastic terrace with lounge chairs overlooking the bay and the inlet to Portofino harbor. I think it can be quite expensive right in Portofino.
