Portable Cooler/Ice Chest in Italy?

Hello,
This is an odd, specific question, but I realize when we are out and about in Umbria this summer, we will be combining our market shopping with sightseeing and will need to protect perishables from the heat. Should I stuff a soft-sided insulated cooler into our luggage, or is that kind of thing easy to find? We will be mostly in small hill towns (based out of Fratta Todina) and I hate to overpack, but it's also a bummer to spend valuable vacation hours searching in vain for some random item.
Thanks!

I would only bring the smallest, most packable size of soft cooler, if any. The thing that you won't find is ice. Ideally, shop pretty close to lunchtime for your picnic lunch. Will your accommodation at Fratta Todina have a minibar or other refrigerator for overnight, if you really stock up? Once, I had a tote bag made of artificial patent leather that I brought as my day bag and it just happened to be an excellent insulator for picnic shopping. If foods are already cold, then just packing then closely together in my current (heavy nylon) day bag, maybe insulated by a scarf, is OK for a couple of hours.

If your intention is to drive back and stock the fridge, then I suppose that soft cheeses or cut meats would be most in need of protection for a whole afternoon. A whole, small salami, for instance, wouldn't have the same problem.

Thanks! We will be staying at a house with full kitchen and will be doing our grocery shopping at markets while sightseeing, so it's not just lunch supplies.

The word in Italian is Frigorifero Portatile (or Frigo Portatile). They can be found in any store that sells camping equipment, including larger grocery stores that sell non-food items. You'll need to ask locally. I'm sure there are several in Perugia.

Shelley,
I truly understand your delimma. I used a soft side cooler/lunch bag as my toiletries/cosmetic bag..Dual purpose worked great. On my first motor trip I spent too much time searching for a sufficient cooler and was unsuccessful. If you are in the larger towns you may find a Conferama.. The small towns and villages don't have them or ice. Depending upon how long you will be there you may even want to bring ice packs with you. Keep I mind many Italians shop daily and homes have very small refrigerators.

Thanks Lorieann. Double-duty is a good idea. We will likely shop frequently at markets, but keeping things fresh in the car before we get it to our rental is a concern.

You can find in Italy pretty much everything that you can find in a North America.
Somehow I don't understand why some people have this image of Italy from the pre-war era.
Believe it or not nearly all Italians nowadays don't shop at open air markets, but at chain supermarkets and most do so once or twice a week, because they don't have time to go every day.
Here is what you can find in Italy. I don't know the area you are going well enough to suggest a store, but Perugia is near and it's not a small town and they have plenty of supermarkets like this one or this one in Todi.
